Three years of injury and death on Toronto’s streets

Memorial to a pedestrian killed at Annette Street and Pacific Avenue, October 2024

With the support of Walk Toronto, I have created a map of all serious injuries and deaths suffered by pedestrians and cyclists in motor vehicle collisions within the City of Toronto, between September 15, 2023 and September 15, 2026. This data comes from the City of Toronto’s open data portal, and includes all collisions on city streets and roadways, including sidewalks and paths. (It does not include crash data on provincial highways or on private property.)

A Vision Zero philosophy, adopted by the City of Toronto, is based on the premise that any serious traffic injury or death is preventable, and not inevitable. Vision Zero recognizes that humans make mistakes, and the road network should be designed to mitigate the results of those errors. The goal of any Vision Zero program should be no deaths or injuries on our streets. With over 500 pedestrians and cyclists seriously injured or killed over a three year period (including 83 deaths), Toronto has a long way to go.

For now, this map remains a work in progress, but is now at a point where it’s ready to be shared for discussion and for feedback. Please feel free to contact me with your suggestions.
